Mt. Rushmore

We made it to Rapid City on Monday. It was a very overcast day with the threat of rain. We only saw a drop or two but it was quite chilly. As soon as we got our camper set up at Mystery Mountain Campground, we headed up to Mt. Rushmore. It was quite breathtaking.

Every evening there is a lighting ceremony to illuminate the mountain of presidents. By that evening the wind was terribly fierce and the temperature had dropped. It was in the high 30's with wind gusts that blew us backward. I've never been in wind that strong. When taking pictures at night, the shutter has to stay open to capture the image. If the camera moves, the image is blurred. Jordan took his tripod to capture the lighted presidents, but the wind was so strong, it kept moving his tripod. This picture was as clear as he could get.

After the lighting part of the ceremony, they honored all the veterans who were there. They called them up on stage and then had them walk by and touch an American flag. It was an honor for me to spend Memorial Day at Mt. Rushmore with the brave men and women who had served our country.

The day before, Sunday, we heard that the clouds were so thick and low that Mt. Rushmore could not be seen. That was hard to believe as big as they are and as close as you can get.
